Getting a crowd on a rainy and cold Wednesday night could be a challenge, but it didn’t seem that way for Philadelphia based artist Daffo. The stage was warmed and primed by Earth 2 Tiffany, setting the tone and the sound for the night. And the crowd graciously thanked her for opening the show while extending their excitement for Daffo’s set.
As soon as Gabi Gamberg started singing, their world was immediately clear to me. They share the soulful and melancholic whine as Wednesday or Big Thief, which they also shared a stage with the former on Wednesday’s recent tour in late 2025. Gamberg’s voice has a warmness to it that eases you into their perspective of anxieties or fear, sort of telling you, “It’s okay, just listen.” However, the crowd was not just listening, they were feeling and singing back every word of every song. It was clear that this show was some sort of release for some of the audience, and for others this was a long-awaited night.
Daffo opened with “Get a Life”, from their recently released album, Where the Earth Bends. Off this record, they played the singles, “Sideways”, “Dagger Song”, and “Habit”, while also calling back to more originals such as their debut “Poor Madeline” and “Good God.”
There was not a moment in the show where the audience wasn’t mesmerized and gave Daffo their undivided attention.
Taking photos at a show with no photo pit is always a gamble, since some crowds tend to not like when someone is weaseling around with a camera bag and a camera in front of their view. However this was not the case for Daffo’s fans. They were gracious and happy to shift for my shots. An artist’s fans can tell you a lot about not only the music, but the overall tone of what they represent. I came into this show eager to see what Daffo had to offer, and I left a fan and with one more album saved on Tidal. I’ll certainly be paying attention to Daffo and where they’ll be going.
